The Boeing B-17E Flying Fortress; the North American B-25; the Curtiss P-40E; the Grumann F4F-3 Wildcat ? to many these terms are akin to a foreign language. But for the intrepid young heroine in Mardiyah A. Tarantino?s newest novel ?Alice at the Home Front? (published by iUniverse), spotting these aircrafts leads to unexpected adventures.

?Alice at the Home Front? is set in Providence, Rhode Island, at the height of World War II. The realities of the era made an indelible mark on a coming-of-age Tarantino.

?As a child I was inspired by the unity and solidarity which swept over the land during World War II,? says Tarantino. ?We as children willingly joined in the sacrifices made by our parents at the home front for the soldiers at the war front.?

Tarantino revisits many of these memories through her protagonist. ?Unforgettable Alice,? Tarantino describes her young heroine. ?Her humor and persistence will appeal to readers of all ages.?

In ?Alice at the Home Front,? Alice works diligently at learning to recognize U.S. and enemy aircrafts, hoping someday to earn a medal for sighting a German Messerschmitt. Her dedication to the war efforts leads her to the Red Cross, where she becomes a dedicated volunteer. Armed with a whimsical imagination and her devoted childhood friend, Jimmy, who is serving in the Civil Air Patrol, Alice navigates the strange world of war with the grace of the young and the fortitude of the wise.

?Apart from Alice?s appeal, young readers as well as adults will be reminded of the strong solidarity binding U.S. citizens on the home front and the soldiers at war.?

The Sucker’s Kiss

Praise for The Sucker’s Kiss”Alan Parker is a master of historical perspective. In The Sucker’s Kiss, he evokes early twentieth-century San Francisco with all the grit and ferment of a West Coast William Kennedy.”- T. C. Boyle”Alan Parker has written an engaging, entertaining romp. . . . His rogue’s story is funny, ebullient, and ultimately poignant.”- Kevin Baker, author of Paradise Alley”Memo to Writers Guild of America and the Screen Actors Guild: Please go on strike more often. Why? Well, while you were picketing and protesting, a director and writer, Alan Parker, decided to write a hell of a novel, The Sucker’s Kiss. You might expect Sir Alan to take as his territory England, particularly North London. He might have written of highwaymen and he chose instead the forty-eight states. There goes his picaresque hero, Thomas Moran, goaded into pickpocketing by the San Francisco earthquake of 1906. After that the sky is the limit and two oceans his borders.”- Frank McCourt, author of Angela’s Ashes”Triumphant . . . Parker has created a splendid character, an amiable, amoral rogue whom the reader cannot help rooting for.”- Daily Mail (U.K.)”A gripping, entertaining, and finely wrought story to match the best of his films.”- The Independent on Sunday (U.K.)”A thrilling and enjoyable read, filmic and brilliantly paced. As you might expect, Parker is a gifted storyteller.”- Scotland on Sunday (U.K.)”A vivid, colorful, fast-paced, literary, and cinematic work, full of strong characterizations and wonderfully textured prose.”- Nottingham Evening Post (U.K.)
