Planning for my holiday this year- off to Italy in a week. I’ve bought some film- now it’s a question of deciding what cameras to take. So far I’ve decided on 2 120 cameras- a folding Ensign Selfix and a Holga. Also a small 35mm film camera- probably Smena 8M.

Cost here in Moscow- the Kodak 35mm and the Fomapan about a pound or just over per film,(50-60 roubles) the Fujicolour and Kodak Portra about 2 pounds 50 per film( 120 roubles) . I know some people get amazing bargains- this is the most reasonable I have found.

Great fake! Svema factory bankrupted many years ago. You can read about this fact in russian. Some photos of dead factory .

Seen on your photo stream. (?)

Have a great trip, whichever cameras you take!
Hope its not as damp as it is at the moment..
But September can be great in Italy!

nice mix of films. bring us pictures!! ;)

  7. Brian Says:

Thanks! I’d love to find a reliable source of siscount expired film in Moscow- colour 120 film in particular is rather expensive.
Mackeson- i’ve never tried any high ASA film – It’d be great for the interior of churches etc, I know. I tend to avoid taking interior shots unless there’s a convenient surface to rest the camera on. Maybe i should try and find some…

Tomas Radzevicius- I’ve heard that it’s actually repackaged Fomaton- but the packaging is all in Russian and Ukrainian and it looks a bit different from the Fomatron I have used. I expect they are just capitalizing on the brand name and maybe using up stocks of packaging material left over from their production days.

Definitely bring your Holga to Italy. You will not be dissapointed. However, the winding back streets (and canals) of italy can be murder on a Holga if you do not use 400 speed or higher. In my Venice set, all photos were taken either fairly early in the morning (before 9 a.m.) or in the afternoon, after 3 p.m., when the shadows began to lengthen in the golden light. The one thing that Holga and Leica love is a golden autumn!
Can’t wait to see the results!

  9. Leroy Says:

JTR- thanks- I’ll bear that in mind. I’ve noticed the Holga dosn’t cope too well with bright light and big areas of dark shadow in the same picture.

has svema made a film that doesn’t require you to manually roll onto a spool yet??

  11. Chad Says:

Krasnyi- the b/w film comes in a reusable cassette- handy- but the end of the film is not taped to the cassette spool so you can’t rewind in the camera. After the last frame you feel a strange slackness as the film comes loose. In that sense it’s like 120. The 120 film looks like any other 120 film except it’s packed in foil and not sealed plastic. But I haven’t use it yet. As I said- it’s packaged by Svema- but not necessarily made by them. :-)

  12. Leon Says:

Update- peeling away the Russian language sticker on the 120 "Svema" reveals a label which says in English "Made by Forte photographic laboratories, Hungary". ie: it’s rebranded Fortepan. I have just finished a roll of it in my Hawkeye.

    HA typical :) cheers mate!
bought some shanghai 100GP3 recently. out of the packet it looked like someone wround the film with sugar paper, and then stamped numbers onto it with a potato stamp. scary. waiting for it to be developed… hope something comes out!

now a days, I see film like crack… you just can’t get enough of it ;)

Back from holiday now- a couple of weeks already and slowly scanning negatives… and frankly I wish i’d taken some of that ISO 3200 film that you mentioned Mackwerk. It would have been great with all those church interiors…
[CK]- yes- I really need to find a place for expired film bargains. Which is difficult- probably because of these people:

  16. Cody Says:

how expensive that 35mm svema is? i bought some expired lately and it just feels different from modern film, i shoot ot as 25 iso though…

  17. Bill Says:

Jakub.jira- here in Moscow it’s not expensive- about a pound a roll (55 rubles) . But I’m pretty sure it’s not made in Ukraine any more.
