Question by British Pakistani: What are the requirements to become a Screen Actors Guild member?
I wish to know what I need to do so I can be a Screen Actors Guild member. I have seen some people say you have to have a part in a movie, where can I go to find a part in a movie I can do? Is there an age limit for the Screen Actors Guild? My last question is, what does the Screen Actors Guild mean by when they say – Screen Actors Guild film? I thought that they don’t make films.

Anybody can join, and pay them the $ 1000.00 dues. They put you into their data base with pictures, and IF you are used in a film the pay, and conditions are regulated. Extra money for smoke, and special effects like gunshots and such.

need to act in theatre or big screen movies working for movie company is critical

it’s just a union like the grocery cashiers union, when a film says SAG film, it means it was made using union labor. Everyone is in SAG from actors to film crew, even the security gaurd at the gate and the secretary. They’re all part of the union, it’s not that special.

There’s no reason to be in it unless they’re going to stand up for your labor rights. Some SAG people thought they can get free movies, it’s just not the case, some may not know any better and let them in but i read specifically that unionization does not give them entitlement to free movies. No more than a cashier is allowed to take whatever she wants from the store without paying.

lol you do NOT have to pay to join.
You get you SAG (screen actors guild) card when you do a proffesional film project. (it must be listed on imdb)
There is no age limit, but you must be a proffesional actor/actress. They do not make films.
the protect proffesional actors by making sure they are paid enough money (and more) have enough breaks, and make sure everything is happy and safe for the actors.

All of the above answers are wrong. It costs $ 1160 last time I checked and you have to be hired as an actor on a SAG signatory
film, TV show and/or some commercials. Yes, some commercials are SAG too. This normally means the project is being shot on film stock-not on video. Video is (normally) covered by AFTRA. You are not forced to join for the first two professional jobs (this may have changed to one or three jobs). Rules are voted on and changed often. Eventually, you will have to join and will be expected to pay your dues bi-annually and you will NOT be able to work on non-SAG productions. That is the #1 rule.
